FAQ

When should I take my childbirth classes? I recommend finishing your childbirth classes by approximately 36 weeks, so you have enough time to absorb the information and practice the different coping methods that you are taught. Many participants choose to take classes even earlier in their pregnancies in order to have more time to practice relaxation and other natural birthing techniques. I suggest asking your OB or Midwife about any issues specific to your pregnancy and if they think you should end classes earlier than 35 weeks.

How early can I take this class? As early as 18 – 22 weeks. Earlier is better since this many of the techniques you learn require time to practice. You can take the class as late as you want but you will not have as much time to practice the techniques you learn.

What should I bring with me to the childbirth classes? Wear comfortable clothing and bring yourself and a partner or support person.

I am probably going to need a cesarean. Is there a class for me? Yes! Contact me for information on a private consultation.

I’m thinking of trying a natural birth, but might want an epidural. Will I get what I need in the Group Class? I encourage everyone to keep an open mind when it comes to their labor and birth options, as things do not always go as planned, and babies have a mind of their own. My Group Prepared Childbirth Series is a standard class, which covers both natural comfort measures as well as choices in medication and medical intervention. While some plan to labor naturally, many people who sign up for Prepared Childbirth know they definitely want an epidural. The class covers natural comfort measures (i.e. positions for labor and relaxation techniques) but still covers medication and intervention, with an emphasis on informed consent and understanding the implications of certain procedures. I have had an equal number of couples “plan” for an epidural and have a natural labor as I have had “plan” for a natural labor and have an epidural. It’s always good to know as much as possible so we can be best prepared. My childbirth classes provide you with an excellent overview of late pregnancy, the labor and birth process and all of your options.

Do I need to take a regular childbirth class in addition to the Multiples class? No. The multiples class encompasses a prepared childbirth curriculum that is geared towards families expecting multiples.

What is your Method?

I believe fully in a woman's ability to have a safe, normal, and natural childbirth. I also believe that everyone has a right to choose what is best for themselves. I like to say that my method is "evidence based." I use data and research to help illustrate "trends" in birthing that can have an effect on your OB or Midwife's suggestions for labor. My classes are meant to provide you with tools that help you analyze and understand the choices you will have, and give you techniques to deal with what will come. The most important outcome, besides the health and safety of mother and child, is the feeling that the birth experience was positive- no matter what choice is made. I cover all aspects of preparing for labor, birth and postpartum recovery so you can set the stage for a positive birth experience.

Should I take another CBE class in addition to this? No, this class is comprehensive.
